Overview
The reinforcing fibers distinguish filament tape from conventional film-backed packing tape. Longitudinal constructions place fibers along the roll, while cross-filament constructions reinforce in two directions. The appropriate design depends on how the tape is loaded and where damage could occur during handling.
A tensile value alone does not describe a secure package. Adhesion to the wrapping surface, edge geometry and the way the tape is applied also matter. Evaluate the complete bundle or carton through the intended handling process, and keep load restraint requirements separate from general packaging reinforcement.
Typical Applications
Bundling components
Group suitable profiles, pipes or other items for handling. Assess the tape path, contact surface and edges, with protective packing where the product finish could be marked.
Carton reinforcement
Reinforce selected carton edges or closures as part of a packaging design. The board strength and filled package should be evaluated together with the proposed tape construction.
Transport preparation
Temporarily secure suitable loose components during packing. Where tape contacts a finished surface, include removal and appearance checks after the planned storage and transport period.
Selection Guide
Choose reinforcement direction
Describe how the bundle or box loads the tape. Compare longitudinal and cross-filament constructions for the task rather than choosing only by tape width or appearance.
Review the contact surface
Identify corrugated board, wrapping film or exposed components. Dust, oil and surface coatings can alter adhesion, so a laboratory value on a different material is not sufficient.
Validate the package
Agree on wrap pattern, overlap and cutting method. Trial the packed unit through representative lifting, movement and storage without treating packaging tape as certified lifting equipment.
Purchase specifications and acceptance
| Confirm | Include in your enquiry |
|---|---|
| Dimensions and tolerances | Width (mm), roll length (m), thickness (µm or mm), core size and tolerances. State whether thickness means the backing or the complete tape, and whether the liner is included. |
| Tape construction | Required backing, adhesive type, colour and liner, where applicable. Include the materials to be bonded and a sample or drawing when available. |
| Performance and acceptance | Required properties and acceptance limits, with the test method, substrate, application conditions, dwell time and service conditions. Compare results only under equivalent test conditions. |
| Packing and delivery | Order quantity, rolls per carton, labelling, destination and required documents. Confirm the agreed specification, sample and delivery terms before ordering. |
Dimensions and performance depend on the selected grade. Confirm the specification and acceptance criteria in the quotation, sample approval and order documents.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between mono and cross-filament tape?
Mono-filament tape is reinforced mainly along its length. Cross-filament tape adds reinforcement in the transverse direction. The useful choice depends on the package design and how forces or damage act on the tape.
Can filament tape replace transport straps?
Not automatically. Bundling, pallet restraint and lifting are different tasks. Any substitution requires validation of the complete packaging or restraint system; a tape's tensile strength alone does not establish equivalent performance.
Is fiberglass filament tape easy to remove from products?
Removal depends on the adhesive and surface, not only the reinforcement. If tape touches finished goods, define residue and staining limits and test removal after the expected time in storage.
